Mitochondria are the part of your cells that turn food and oxygen into usable energy. More of them, working better, means more work at a lower cost — better endurance, faster recovery, steadier day-to-day energy.

Making energy is a controlled burn. Electrons move down a chain and some always leak, producing reactive oxygen species — oxidative stress. That is not a malfunction; it is the signal your body reads to build more mitochondria in the first place.

So the honest picture has two halves. Push output, and you raise the burn. Handle the burn badly and you get damage and fatigue. Handle it too aggressively — blanket antioxidants at every hour — and you mute the very signal that drives the adaptation you were training for. Timing beats dose.

CoQ10 / ubiquinol

CoQ10 physically carries electrons inside the energy chain and doubles as an antioxidant there. Your own levels fall with age, and statins lower them further by blocking the same pathway that makes cholesterol.

The nuance: Ubiquinol is the reduced form and absorbs several times better than plain ubiquinone in adults, which is real. The stronger claim — that conversion 'stops working' at 40 — is overstated; the decline is gradual and matters more with each decade. If you're older, on a statin, or paying for it anyway, the better-absorbed form is the sensible default.

Watch: Take it with fat — it's fat-soluble, and a dry capsule on an empty stomach is largely wasted.

Creatine

The most evidence-backed supplement in this whole space. It recharges the fast energy system used for hard efforts, and there's decent evidence for cognitive benefit under sleep deprivation.

The nuance: Worth being precise: creatine feeds the phosphocreatine system, it does not build mitochondria. It's on this list because it's the cheapest real win in the category, not because it's mitochondrial.

NAD+ precursors (NR, NMN)

Urolithin A

The nuance: One of the few compounds here with genuine placebo-controlled human trials, showing improvements in muscle endurance and, more recently, markers of immune ageing in midlife adults. Still modest effects, and no evidence it extends anyone's life.

Methylene blue

The nuance: The dose response is a U: low supports, high does the opposite and becomes pro-oxidant. Human data for everyday cognitive or energy use is thin, and the product quality question is serious — this is a dye, and non-pharmaceutical grades carry contaminants you do not want.

MOTS-c

The nuance: That it exists and rises with exercise in humans is established. That injecting it produces those benefits is not — the therapeutic evidence is animal work. It is also a prohibited substance in tested sport.

The nuance: Be clear-eyed: there have been no human trials at all. Everything known is from rodents, it is approved by no regulator anywhere, and it is sold as a research chemical with no purity guarantee. This is the least-evidenced item on this list and often the most-hyped.

NAC / glutathione

Glutathione is your main internal antioxidant. NAC supplies the scarce ingredient your body needs to make more of it, and it does reliably raise glutathione and lower oxidative-stress markers.

The nuance: The catch nobody mentions: the oxidative signal from training is part of what tells your body to adapt. Taken in high doses right around sessions, general antioxidants have repeatedly blunted the training response. Same dose, different hour, different outcome — keep the training window clean and take buffers well away from it.

High-dose vitamin C + E

Handles the oxidative costWell established

Classic antioxidants, and the ones with the clearest evidence of a downside when mistimed.

The nuance: Multiple human trials show high daily doses taken around training reduce the gains in mitochondrial and endurance adaptation. Food-level intake is fine; it's the gram-scale doses stacked on top of a training block that backfire.

Astaxanthin / ALA / other targeted antioxidants

Handles the oxidative costMechanism only

Antioxidants that concentrate in or near the mitochondrion rather than mopping up indiscriminately.

The nuance: The theory is that targeted beats blanket — you protect the machinery without deleting the whole training signal. Early human work is interesting but nowhere near settled.

Iron, B12, folate, D, magnesium, thyroid

The boring answer, and usually the right one. Energy production needs raw materials, and a shortfall in any of them produces exactly the fatigue people go looking for exotic fixes for.

Watch: If you feel flat and haven't measured ferritin, B12, folate, vitamin D and a full thyroid panel, that is the cheapest possible next test — and far more likely to explain it than anything injectable.

Worth knowing

Feeling tired is not automatically a mitochondrial problem. Thyroid disease, iron deficiency, sleep apnoea, depression and simple under-eating are all far more common, and all are testable.

Most compounds in this category are sold as research chemicals with no purity guarantee. The gap between what's on the label and what's in the vial is a real and under-discussed risk.

Am I actually recovering — or just training on credit?

Sleep is when the adaptation you paid for in the gym actually gets built. Growth hormone pulses and the bulk of daily testosterone release are tied to deep sleep, so short or broken nights hit the exact system an optimizing athlete is trying to move.

A few nights of restricted sleep measurably raise stress hormones and worsen glucose handling in healthy people. It shows up in the same markers this app already tracks.

The signals worth watching are boring and reliable: hours actually asleep, resting heart rate drifting up, and heart-rate variability trending down.

Magnesium

The nuance: Especially relevant here: apnoea and testosterone therapy each make the other worse, and untreated apnoea will keep pushing hematocrit up no matter what else you change.

🪞 Skin & acne

Why is my skin reacting — and which lever is actually driving it?

Acne on an enhanced protocol is not bad luck or bad hygiene. Androgens are converted in the skin to DHT, which binds receptors in the oil glands and turns up oil production. More androgen, more conversion, more oil.

There's a second, quieter driver: IGF-1 and insulin. Both increase oil production and make the skin's androgen receptors more responsive — and IGF-1 also pushes more testosterone to convert into DHT. That's why diet shows up here at all.

When to escalate

Sweat, friction, and the basics

The nuance: Worth saying plainly: this is a small lever. Hormonal acne is not caused by being dirty, and scrubbing harder makes it worse, not better.

Sudden severe acne in an adult can occasionally signal something else hormonal. If it appeared without a protocol change to explain it, it's worth a proper workup.

🍽 Gut & absorption

Am I actually absorbing what I'm eating — and is my gut paying for the rest of my protocol?

Everything else in this app assumes the food and supplements you take actually get in. Absorption is where that assumption is either true or quietly false, and it fails silently — there's no symptom that says 'you absorbed 60% of that'.

A gut lining is one cell thick. Its job is to let nutrients through and keep bacterial fragments out. Hard training, heavy NSAID use, alcohol and very-low-fiber diets all stress that barrier, and when fragments do get through they drive low-grade inflammation that shows up in the markers this lens reads.

For an enhanced athlete there's a second reason to care: several things in this space are hard on the gut specifically. Oral compounds pass through the liver first, GLP-1s slow the stomach dramatically by design, and high-dose iron is directly irritating.

Enough protein, spread out

Probiotics

The nuance: The honest version: benefits are strain-specific and don't generalise, most products don't name the strain precisely enough to match any trial, and colonisation is usually temporary. A generic multi-strain capsule is closer to a lottery ticket than a treatment.

L-glutamine

The nuance: The mechanism is genuine and it has real evidence in clinical settings — critical illness, burns. Extending that to a healthy lifter with an unremarkable gut is a leap the data doesn't currently support.

The nuance: Genuinely necessary in diagnosed pancreatic insufficiency, and that's a real diagnosis worth having if symptoms fit. In people without it, the evidence that they improve digestion or absorption is thin.

Coeliac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, H. pylori and pancreatic insufficiency are all real, common, testable, and treatable — and all get mistaken for 'a sensitive stomach' for years.

Watch: Blood in stool, unexplained weight loss, persistent night-time symptoms or new anaemia are not supplement problems. Those go to a doctor.

Worth knowing

Persistent gut symptoms deserve a diagnosis before a supplement stack. The conditions that matter here are testable, and treating coeliac disease with glutamine wastes years.

'Leaky gut' as a standalone diagnosis is not recognised, though intestinal permeability is a real, measurable thing that genuinely changes with stress, alcohol and NSAIDs. Both halves of that sentence are true, and most sources only tell you one.

🦾 Joints & connective tissue

Can my tendons keep up with the strength I'm building?

Muscle adapts faster than tendon. That gap is the single most useful idea in this lens: strength can climb quickly — very quickly on androgens — while the tendon it pulls on remodels on a slower clock. Injuries happen in the gap.

Connective tissue has poor blood supply, which is why it's slow to heal and why loading it deliberately matters more than resting it in most cases.

Several compounds common in this community change that balance directly. Some raise the mismatch by adding strength fast; a couple appear to change tendon quality itself, and not always for the better.

Watch: This is the lever that matters most on androgens and matters least when nothing is accelerating strength.

Collagen or gelatin with vitamin C

Collagen peptides taken about an hour before loading, with vitamin C, are the most-studied nutritional lever here — the idea being to supply building blocks while circulation to the tendon is briefly raised.

The nuance: Evidence is genuinely mixed. Some trials show improved collagen synthesis markers and pain, others show nothing beyond the protein itself. It's cheap and low-risk, which is a fair reason to try it — not the same as it being proven.

Watch: Dry, achy, creaky joints appearing shortly after starting or raising an AI is the pattern. That's information, and it points at the dose.

BPC-157 / TB-500

Peptides very widely used in this community specifically for tendon and ligament complaints, based on animal work showing accelerated healing of tendon, ligament and gut tissue.

The nuance: Be clear-eyed about the gap: the animal data is real and reasonably consistent, and the human data essentially does not exist — no completed controlled trials for these indications. They're sold as research chemicals with no purity guarantee, and both are prohibited in tested sport. The confidence with which they're recommended online is not backed by human evidence.

Growth-hormone peptides

The nuance: What's missing is outcome data: that IGF-1 rises is easy to show; that tendons heal faster or tear less as a result is not established in humans. Carpal-tunnel-type symptoms from fluid retention are a recognised side effect at higher doses.

Omega-3

The nuance: The trade-off worth knowing: tendinopathy is largely a degenerative rather than inflammatory problem, and there's reasonable evidence that blunting the inflammatory signal around training interferes with tendon and muscle adaptation. Useful short-term tool, poor long-term strategy — and see the gut lens for the other cost.

Fluoroquinolone antibiotics

Worth knowing because it's specific and serious: ciprofloxacin and related antibiotics carry a documented risk of tendon damage and rupture, highest in the Achilles, and the risk persists for weeks after the course.

Watch: If you've recently taken one and a tendon starts complaining, that's a real association and a reason to back off load and speak to a doctor — not a coincidence.

Worth knowing

A tendon that has actually torn does not rehabilitate with load or peptides — sudden pain with a pop, visible swelling, or loss of strength needs imaging, not patience.

Joint pain in this community is often assumed to be mechanical when it's hormonal, and the fix is a dose conversation rather than a new supplement.

🧠 Cognition & mood

Is my head keeping up — and is anything I'm running working against it?

Mood and clarity are downstream of things this app already measures. Hormones, sleep, blood sugar and inflammation all move cognition, which means a foggy month usually has a cause somewhere in your own data rather than a missing nootropic.

For an enhanced athlete the hormonal angle is unusually direct. Androgens change mood, and so does the crash when they're withdrawn. Oestrogen is not just a side effect to be minimised — the brain has receptors for it, and both too little and too much read as irritability, low mood and flat motivation.

The most common causes of feeling mentally flat are unglamorous and testable: short sleep, low iron, low vitamin D, thyroid disease and depression itself.

Creatine

Ashwagandha
